Chapter Nineteen

CLAUDE

I know Alexei is upset—that hunter said something to him that seemed to put him over the edge and turn him back into the silent judging type.

Which means it’s my job to draw him out of it.

“Hey, Alexei, did you see how sexy I was fighting those men?”

He glances over at me and raises an eyebrow. “All I could see was your ass on display for everyone,” he says, and even though he’s trying not to look amused, it’s clear he is.

“I did that just for you,” I joke.

“Those were my favorite pants.”

“They still are, aren’t they?” I ask. “I made them even better.” Once the police arrived, Alexei forced me to tie a shirt around my waist since he was “mortified” by my new look. I’m convinced he just didn’t want to share, but I keep that to myself because he’s so damn adorable all the time and would get fired up if I said that. Time in the shower did seem to cool him down a bit.

“I put your favorite clothes back on after my shower,” I inform him as I walk over to him.

He glances down. “Pink is definitely not my favorite color.”

I grin as I block him from walking past me. He raises an eyebrow again, so I drape my arms over his shoulders. “I know you love violent men. So tell me, how sexy was it when I threw that guy around?”

He’s unreadable as he stares at me, but there’s something about his posture that tells me I have him. I just need to slowly and carefully break through the barrier. Or claw through it desperately because this man likes to make me work for what I want.

I lean in until my mouth is barely an inch from his. “You can’t lie to me,” I whisper.

He groans before pressing into me, his mouth shoved roughly against mine. Everything is so damn rough with him, but it’s like this war raging inside him where he’s determined to not let me in while honestly wanting me to invade. Needing me to invade. He pretends like he doesn’t mind being alone, but it’s clear that it’s slowly driving him crazy.

No one’s meant to be alone for as long as he has been.

I draw him in close as his lips move against mine and his hand slides into my hair, pulling me into him. And when I wrap my arms around him, determined to never let him pull away, he seems to calm his movements.

“I’m not going anywhere,” I assure him.

“You can go wherever you want,” he says as he glances up at me.

I kiss his cheek. “Don’t be stubborn.”

“I’m never stubborn,” he says, and then gets a slight upturn of his lips because he knows he’s the most stubborn man alive.

“We’ll let you believe that,” I say as I pull him in closer again, needing more of him. All of him, if he’d just freaking give in to me. Instead he’s stubborn as hell and resists giving in to anything.
